The copper book cover, with its repetition of the Hebrew letters Mem, Shin, Hey (Moshe) had its genesis while I was a student in Prof. Lechtzin's class at Tyler decades ago. The two embossed pages that begin the book were also done then. At the time, I also made countless pen and ink sketches illustrating ten key events in the life of Moses. Many years passed before I recommenced work on those drawings. The "Moshe" drawings were my first attempt to work with my right hand after healing from a compound fracture which rendered me disabled for months. I converted ideas laid down in my early sketches into drawings through a new medium and creative vision. I tried to keep out "graven images" through an abstraction of the sometimes hackneyed narrative images. On rough watercolor paper the actual additive process with graphite is counteracted with the reductive marks of an eraser. The book is a melding of craft, ideas and time.

"Ivan’s Karp"

By Arie A. Galles Morris Museum, Morristown, NJ 1997

I made this sculpture/miniature golf 9th. hole for the Morris Museum’s fund raising event/installation, “ArtLink,” by invited regional artists. I tried to gently spoof my art dealer at the time, and friend, Ivan Karp, Director of the OK Harris Gallery in NYC. The golf hole, shaped like a giant carp with a caricature of Ivan’s head attached to it, was one of the most difficult holes to play. The frustration of playing the hole was intended to parallel the frustration artists feel trying to find a gallery in New York City to show their work. It was a blast to make, plywood, chicken wire and Paper Maché made out of the NY Times. The carp now resides on the side of a swimming pool in New Jersey, while the noble head of Ivan graces the interior of my studio in California."
