Arie Galles | Fourteen Stations Preparatory Details

From the start, I knew that the "Fourteen Stations" / "Hey Yud Dalet" suite would involve much more than the creation of the 15 full scale drawings, and their accompanying poem/drawings, but had no idea what a Sisyphean task it would become. Thus what is nominally a suite of 15 drawings has evolved into an endeavor that consist of 91 works of art.

The smallest drawings encompass only a detail, usually a “killing ground” within each extermination site. They are my initial encounters with each location, my hand and mind transferring a segment of the image into charcoal marks. The challenge is too immense to tackle at once. At this point I am unable to see the final limiting borders of the image, but I must begin. The larger drawings are wider views of the same sites, with the orientating axis rotated as if I was ascending a spiraling plume of smoke. This creates a protective distancing for me and provides a deeper awareness of the size and configuration of each camp. The Pen & Ink drawings are the first glimpse of the "Golden Mean" proportions of each final composition. These are maps of what each full-scale drawing will eventually contain.
